“Problems mainly due to budgetary situation”: director Bart Ouvry of AfricaMuseum Tervuren

[ in Dutch ] The problems at the AfricaMuseum in Tervuren are mainly a result of a lack of money. This is what director Bart Ouvry says, who is responding for the first time to the sharp criticism of political scientist and public officer Nadia Nsayi. In a column in De Morgen, she accuses him of toxic behavior, weak leadership and too little eye for diversity.

The AfricaMuseum refrained from commenting. But in Terzake, director Bart Ouvry now admits that there are “a lot of problems” in the museum. “They mainly have to do with the budgetary situation”, says Ouvry.
“I would like it to move faster,” he says. “We want to promote as much as possible that staff from Africans come. But there are administrative and budgetary constraints to make recruitments. We are bound by federal regulations. In the coming days, Ouvry and Nsayi will have a conversation.
