Fathers are right in conflict over ownership of the Africa Museum collection

[ in Dutch ] The judge has ruled that the collection of the Africa Museum in Berg en Dal is owned by the fathers of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit. The National Museum of World Cultures (NMVW) must return the collection to them.

The fathers had gone to court, after a conflict with the museum over the ownership of the collection. The NMVW has operated the now closed Africa Museum since 2014. Both parties believed they were the owners of the museum collection.

The court in Arnhem has now ruled that almost the entire collection has been given on loan to the NMVW by the priests, because preserving it was of great importance to them, says the judge. Only the inventory of the museum is owned by the NMVW. So the rest must be returned to the priests.
