Relatively soon after the formal hand-over (19 February 2025), all 113 ancient bronze objects have been taken from the display cases and carefully packed at the World Museum in Leiden.
The looted objects are part of the Benin Bronzes and will return to Nigeria after almost 130 years.
The plaques, pendants and figures had been on display at the Leiden museum for 25 years. ‘They are beautiful, but not ours,’ says director Marieke van Bommel.
