Jamaica wants British Museum (BM) to return artefacts after deal over Ghanaian gold

The BM owns several totemic statues or “zemi”, sacred to the Taino people who inhabited Jamaica prior to European colonisation.

Under George Osborne’s chairmanship, the BM has proven itself open to using long-term loan deals to resolve repatriation disputes, including a new arrangement to return gold to the Asante king in Ghana.

National Museum Jamaica is now considering a similar deal for indigenous artefacts held in storage in London, in line with a commitment by its government to reclaim treasures held in the UK.

Jamaica is planning to build a new museum in the former British capital of Port Royal which will tell the story of colonialism on the island, and it is hoped the zemis will form a key part of its displays if a deal can be struck.
