More British museums and return to Asante king

Many artefacts in UK collections were taken along with a war indemnity of 50,000 ounces of gold following the Third Anglo-Asante War, then auctioned off to collectors of major museums by the Crown jeweller in order to raise funds for injured soldiers.

Now more museums are approached to discuss restitution.

Among them the University of Oxford’s Pitt Rivers Museum, the Wallace Collection in London, the Burrell Collection, run by Glasgow Life, an arms-length body of Glasgow City Council, and the Wellcome Trust in London.

An informal approach has already been made regarding Asante artefacts within the Royal Collection, some of which are on display in the Grand Vestibule of Windsor Castle.

The discussions are part of a long-term campaign for the return of all looted artefacts. Formal requests have not yet been made.
