South Africa hands over human remains to Namibia

On 19 August 2026, South Africa hosts a historic repatriation send-off and handover ceremony at Iziko Museums in the Western Cape. The occasion honours the return of ancestral remains currently held at Iziko Museums, marking an important step in restoring dignity, identity, and belonging to communities whose ancestors were separated from their homeland for generations.

The ceremony also includes the formal handover of the exhumed mortal remains of two Namibian former political prisoners who were incarcerated on Robben Island during the apartheid era and were subsequently laid to rest in Gugulethu Cemetery and Maitland Cemetery.

Their return represents not only the reunification of loved ones with their ancestral lands, but also a powerful act of remembrance and recognition of the sacrifices made in the struggle against oppression and injustice.
