Four advisory reports Dutch Colonial Collections Committee

Advisory reports from the Colonial Collections Committee on objects for which restitution has been requested by Indonesia. The provenance reports have been added as an appendix.

ID-2023-9 Recommendation Ganesha
The statue of the Hindu god Ganesha is from the area around what is now Lemahduwur in East Java at the foot of the Semeru volcano. The 13th-century statue shows a standing Ganesha with the head of an elephant and four arms. The statue has a flat back, suggesting it was originally positioned against a temple wall. The statue is currently part of the Dutch National Art Collection in the custody of Wereldmuseum Leiden, where it is registered under inventory number RV-1403- 1759.

ID-2023-8 Recommendation Brahma
The statue of the Hindu god Brahma is from Singasari, a Hindu-Buddhist temple complex located close to the town of Malang (East Java) which dates from the late 13th century. Possibly the most important statue of the temple complex, it is currently part of the Dutch National Art Collection in the custody of Wereldmuseum Leiden, where it is registered under inventory number RV-1403- 1582.

ID-2023-7 Recommendation Puputan Badung
The provenance report by the Wereldmuseum describes the collection as ‘war loot from South Bali (1906)’. The collection comprises objects such as weapons, coins, jewellery and textiles which ended up in the collection of the Wereldmuseum as a result of acts of war against the kingdoms of Badung and Tabanan in South Bali in 1906. Appendix A lists the 348 objects that the Committee is advising on; 282 of these are held by the Dutch State and 66 by the Municipality of Rotterdam. This recommendation pertains to the 282 objects held by the Dutch State. A separate procedure pertains to the 66 objects held by the Municipality of Rotterdam.

ID-2023-6 Recommendation Singasari
The two stone statues whose restitution is requested depict the Hindu gods Bhairava and Nandi. The statues are from Singasari, a Hindu-Buddhist temple complex located close to the town of Malang (East Java) which dates from the late 13th century. They are currently part of the Dutch National Art Collection in the custody of Wereldmuseum Leiden, where they are registered under inventory numbers RV-1403-1680 (Bhairava) and RV-1403-1682 (Nandi).
