In Conversation: An ethnography of restitution

Our third In Conversation considers restitution from an ethnographic perspective. Charlotte Joy will discuss the research for her upcoming book, drawing on interviews and her work with UNESCO, with Mirjam Shatanawi and Katarzyna Puzon. We invite you to join our conversation.

In exploring restitution we consider:

  • restitution requests to museums
  • regimes of value and authority across academic and political landscapes
  • different worldviews that shape claims and decisions
  • how a ‘case by case’ basis might ignore assumptions and the inherent asymmetries in approaches that are presented as neutral, such as provenance research, stakeholder mapping, legal regimes, valuations, or conservation reports
