Please, return these items of colonial loot to Africa now!

The repatriation of African art is gaining momentum, but a number of highly important and symbolic pieces remain in the hands of the continent’s former colonisers.

Pressure from African governments and activists, combined with a large dose of colonial guilt, has catalysed the return of African artefacts. But there remain some hugely symbolic and valuable African pieces still on display in Europe and the US.

Africa Report editor Kanika Saigal wants to see these artefacts back to Africa:

  • Nyamyaro eight-legged royal stool (Uganda; British Museum, London)
  • Mandu Yenu Throne (Cameroon; Humboldt Forum, Berlin)
  • Ngadji drum (Kenya; British Museum, London)
  • 300,00- years old Kabwe Man (Broken Hill Skull; Natural History Museum, London)
  • Bangwa Queen (Cameroon; Dapper Foundation, Paris)
  • Rosetta Stone (Egypt; British Museum, London)
  • Rest of Benin Bronzes, Maqdala loot and Asante gold regalia (Nigeria, Ethiopia, Ghana; several places in Europe and North America)
  • Bus of Nefertiti (Egypt; Neues Museum, Berlin)
