Zimbabwe: We want our bird back

Imperialist Cecil John Rhodes had an ancient Zimbabwe Bird and other objects shipped to his private museum in Cape Town. Zimbabwe wants them back.

The ruins of Great Zimbabwe in Masvingo bear witness to a painful story: the disappearance of several iconic soapstone sculptures: Zimbabwe Birds.

In 2003, Zimbabwe retrieved part of one such a Bird from a German museum.

Rhodes private museum at Groote Schuur in Cape Town also has a Bird. Stolen items from Zimbabwe can also be found in the British Museum.

The claim echoes the broader call for restitution of stolen items across Africa.
