Asmat skulls in transit

Many European countries deal with their colonial history and their collections of ethnographic material. As much as human remains seem like the essence of the need to do reparations to indigenous cultures, they are but a small part of the responsibility to understand our entangled histories

In the chapter  Ndambirkus and Ndaokus – Asmat skulls in transit Jan Joris Visser addresses the ethical conundrums involved with the continuous circulation of Asmat ancestral skulls while highlighting possible complications in their reparation.

The essay calls attention to the paradox that restitution in traditional societies can sometimes have adverse consequences and warns that external interference may probably negatively impact the continuation of such traditions.
